The Character introduction begins
with Basil Hallward, the artist who created the portrait of Dorian Gray. Basil
is a jealous and very self-absorbed person who is in love with his own art.
Harry Wotton is next, a friend of
Basil who can be described as calm and full of peace and tranquility also he is
described as a philosopher.
Dorian Gray, (The rich boy with all
the money and looks to beat out any guy who came his way) can be described as a
spoiled boy who never had to work for anything and had everything handed to
him. He changes as the book goes on into the more villainous character.
In the beginning of the book, the beauty of Dorian is heavily emphasized, and his looks are described as astonishing and breath taking while they still have a sense of unknown terror which introduces him as a mysterious and suspenseful character.
ReplyDeleteLord Henry(Harry) sways Dorian to a darker state of mind by telling him of the misfortunes that come with age. While near the garden Henry states, "We degenerate into hideous puppets...there is absolutely nothing in the world but youth..." (Wilde 40) therefore making Dorian's gears start turning. He begins to think thoughts he had never thought before and realizes just how good he has it. Later after Basil finishes painting his portrait of Dorian, the three men observe the work of art. Dorian begins to tear up and shouts, "How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful..." thus beginning his journey of self-pity (Wilde 42).
ReplyDeleteAt his first meeting with Dorian, Lord Henry becomes very interested in him. This interest then starts the friendship between Dorian and Lord Henry. Their relationship reached the point to where Lord Henry becomes the most influential person in Dorian’s life. So with this development Dorian changes and starts to become more unethical.
