Discussion 4: Supernatural

The supernatural occurrences in the book begins when Dorian observes the changes on his portrait and realizes that his wish has come true. The wish that that his portrait grows old, while he remains young; and that his portrait bears his sins and passions while he remains unburdened. As the story progresses Dorian's personality becomes more evil and his sins continue to increase. With each sin he commits Dorian's portrait becomes more hideous and aged while he continues to remain unblemished.

  1. The supernatural occurrences of the novel changing is the main thing that drives the plot throughout the whole story. So the fact that the novel is mainly driven by supernatural things is part of the reason that it can be categorized as a piece of gothic literature.

  2. The power of the supernatural is immensely overlooked in gothic literature. A mere painting lead to several immoral actions and better yet, DEATHS! Dorian had several life-turning junctures throughout the book because of the supernatural painting such as Sybil's suicide, the murder of Basil, and the general deterioration of his conscience. Following the theme of gothic literature, Dorian lets out cries of guilt and sorrow just before he stabs his painting (Wilde 233).
